How does Jane Austen explore the theme of Pride and Prejudice in the novel? The original title of Jane Austens novel, Pride and Prejudice was First impressions. From this title it is clear that Jane Austen wanted to convey to the reader the importance of first impressions and how we form them so quickly. Other themes of the novel include pride, prejudice, conceit and vanity. Most people have these feelings or opinions without even realising it. Pride is a feeling of satisfaction that you have done well, however, it can also mean that you feel better than others. Pride can be linked to vanity, which can be described as a feeling of excessive pride regarding aspects of yourself, for example, your looks or abilities.†¦show more content†¦Elizabeths prejudice against Darcy is fuelled when she hears from Wickham that Darcy has treated him wrongly. Elizabeth accepts Wickhams story without exploring it fully because she believes that he is a gentleman and so is trustworthy. This is another example of how first impressions can be wrong, as Wickham is not a gentleman as Elizabeth first thought and has not told Elizabeth the whole truth about why Darcy treated him wrongly. When Elizabeth finds out the vital information that Wickham has not mentioned her opinion of both Wickham and Darcy changes dramatically. This is a crucial point in the novel as this is when Elizabeth realises how easily she has formed prejudices and opinions about people that are wrong. Austen has also guided the reader to have the same opinions, as Elizabeth and this is the point in the reader realises that they too have formed inaccurate opinions and prejudices against characters. At the beginning of the novel the reader is intended to dislike Darcy. Austen creates this through the use of language by the omniscient narrator. Wuthering Heights Essay Edgar Linton is a character in the novel Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontà «. From early life to death, he resides at the cultivated Thrushcross Grange with his family. He becomes entangled with the affairs of the Earnshaws and eventually a target of Heathcliff. His spoiled and comfortable childhood allows his cowardice to continue to adulthood, proving him an ineffective character whose passiveness warrants Heathcliff’s vengeance. As an adolescent, Edgar displays traces of weakness and incapability. He is first introduced when Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff are at Thrushcross Grange spying on the Lintons. In an argument over holding a small dog, he is characterized as fragile, as he is seen â€Å"weeping silently†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦show more content†¦Even though Edgar has no control over his appearance, it does not excuse his powerless behavior. His daughter, despite her resemblance to Edgar, grows to be headstrong, even challenging Heathcliff. Thr ough the motif of cats, Edgar’s feebleness is further explored. Nelly compares his strength to leave Catherine to that of a cat who â€Å"possesses the power to leave a mouse half killed† (71). Unlike the dog motif reserved for more substantial characters, his is a cat to emphasize weakness. To Nelly, his debility burns deeper to that of an incompetent cat and will cause his ill fate and demise. Edgar is also discerned superficially by other characters. Catherine wishes to marry him not out of intense love but because he will make her the â€Å"greatest woman of the neighborhood† (78). He is appealing to Catherine and society because he is the superego part of the Freud’s human psyche theory, meaning he follows societal standards and morals. Since outwardly he has it all, he has no drive to improve himself internally as an adolescent. Hence, he is only valued by others for his appearance and wealth, not his courage or passion. Edgar handles conflicts poo rly, often leaving his power to other characters’ hands. Brontà « characterizes him as malleable when after Catherine’s fit of rage, he still returns after seeing her beauty. Write about the ways in which Steinbeck presents either Crooks or Curley’s wife. To what extent does he create sympathy for either of these characters? Of Mice and Men is set in 1930’s America in the middle of the economic depression. It is geared towards the pursuit of the American dream, promoting the ideas of equality, life, liberty and happiness. Steinbeck uses Crooks, and to some extent Curley’s wife to challenge the perception of equality and sometimes the language used is, by modern standards, racist and misogynistic. There is an irony in the fact that the people judging Crooks are less intelligent than he is and they refuse to look at anything other than the stereotype of his ethnicity. While he is trying t o make the point that although Lennie has George, he is all alone, he enjoys tormenting Lennie Crooks face lighted with pleasure in his torture. (Steinbeck, 1937, p75). Perhaps this was one of the few opportunities he had to sharpen his mind, and he seized it. However, he was quick enough to realise the danger when Lennie was upset and backed down immediately. Steinbeck uses Crooks’ conversation with Lennie as a means for Crooks to vocalise his position. Lennie asks why he is not welcome in the bunk room and Crooks is aware of the fact he has to spell it out for Lennie (and the reader) and replies â€Å"Cause I’m black. I have also learnt about the correct way of applying the KSP method and how it is used to measure the HR metrics in any given company. This method is used to explore the problems and derive suitable solutions to them. I have learnt that it is important to define the themes used in HR t hat would help in the business expansion of Pepsi. I have also learnt how to define the employees involved in the process of business expansion. I have also learnt about the different ways that the HR contributes to the operational process including business expansion. I have also learnt a new concept about the HR scorecard that focuses on the workforce, alignment with the business strategy, HR strategy, financials and HR employees of an organization. My concepts were clear since there was use of appropriate diagram in the theoretical process. After I went through the entire paper, I was not satisfied with the amount of concepts used in it. I felt that there was scope of using more theory, which would help in the better understanding of the relevant concepts. There was lack of illustrations provided to support the theoretical aspects except the HR score card. I feel that a lot of diagrams help in better understanding of the concepts. The financial analysis did not contain any tables and chart, which would have supported the concepts more. It would help me to understand the process of enhancement of the different productivity programs. Reflection on Group Process I made the assignment with a group of three members. I learnt the crucial aspect of team work while working on the process. During the initial stage, I was not confident about working with other since I am shy and introvert. In the initial phases, we faced lack of cooperation and everyone was busy doing their individual tasks rather than discussing things within the group. This issue was resolved after a few days of working together. We shared good rapport in the group and the team members helped each other in doing the assignment. We divided the work and hence it became easier to do the job. I was involved in the entire research of the subject matter and writing a small section. One of my colleagues was engaged in forming the structure of the assignment and doing the illustrations. The third colleagues filled in the content part. All three of us gave our recommendations on the subject matter, which was later complied to form the final list of recommendation. The use of assessment tools for analyzing the competence of the employees was also a good idea. I felt that the recommendation section comprised of excessive theoretical content except of practical suggestions. It is true that there were practical suggestions made, however, this should have been more. There should be proper courses of action that should have been done based on the previous analysis. I do not believe in the fact that the Pepsi needs to improve its benefit process. The company already has renowned reward system including health insurance, wellness programs, retirement benefits and proper work life benefits. Hence, this recommendation was not appropriate considering the size and popularity of the company. There could have been suggestions like implementing more number of employee engagement activities by defining the probable activities that can be taken by the company. I learnt that the performance management rating is considered as the most important phase and Pepsi undergoes proper assessment of the employees. I learnt that the company engages in evaluating and reviewing of all the HR strategies within fixed regular intervals. Ethical Personal Reflection It is important to formulate ethical guidelines for the recommendations. I have personally reflected on using the 7 steps model of van Lujik. The recommendation of rewarding the employees well is critically analyzed in terms of ethical parameters. I feel that the core moral issue in this recommendation is fair judgment of the skills as well as knowledge of the employees so that effective compensation package can be formulated. The HR managers and HR department personnel are involved in the formulation of the reward policies. The final decision of the reward policy would be jointly taken over by the HR manager and the senior organizational leaders. I require more information on the different types of parameters used for the purpose of deciding the final structure of the compensation packages. I can say that the compensation structure would be helpful in enhancing the motivation level of the employees. However, if the compensation structure is not done in a justified manner, then there can be rivalry between the employees working together. It is the right of the employees with similar skills to receive similar compensation. The injustice to the reward system may have consequences such as bad interpersonal relationships, which may reduce the productivity of the workplace. Bargaining power of suppliers- Low Padini is already engaged both in manufacturing and retailing business. Padinis in-house design is used for styling of the brand and outsourcing the manufacturing products into their store indicates low bargaining power of the suppliers. Thus the bargaining power of suppliers in this diversified company is slow. The above discussion clearly indicates that the intensity of the rivalry in the industry of apparels is high because of the existence of the similar ranges of product but at the same time the treats of entry is low. To perform with stability, the decision of Padini to extend their line of product is ideal for the industry. This is the right time to introduce range of sportswear which is popular and highly demanding among young Malaysians. Capability analysis To assess the strategic capabilities, the company needs to identify its own organizational effectiveness (Lages 2016). Additionally it is important to assess the weaknesses of Padini with the benchmark of other existing companies. Organizational effectiveness and value chain: Initially Padini was engaged in the manufacture and wholesale of ladies wear. Due to stiff competition from the rival companies, the company has concentrated to increase the list of delivering products and quality of services with the support of large workforces. With the effectiveness of the leadership, the company subsequently added childrens and mens lines to its offerings. Thereafter Padini has changed their role from the wholesaler to single-brand store. In this context, the value lies in their product uniqueness and brand recognition in the market. Currently the company has nine levels of family in its family of brands and retail in 330 stores which are franchised outlets, freestanding stores and counters of consignment in Malaysia across the nation. Also the company made available their products at the online as well, named as Padini.com where all products are available and new products can easily be marketed without wasting any huge amount. Now the company is listed on the Se cond Board of Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad and gained the shareholders confidence and increased the brand reputation. According to the SWOT analysis of the company, the following are the strengths of Padini Group based on the years performance and current market position: Strengths: High growth rate Reduced labor costs Brand reputation in the domestic market High profitability and revenue over the past years Skilled workforces However, weaknesses are as follows: Competitive market and unstable profitability are the biggest concerns of the company. Operational capabilities: Despite the above mentioned threats the company has enough organizational capabilities because of being considered as one of the preferred apparel companies in Malaysia. The effective leadership and skilled designers of the company are added creativities in terms of lunching new trends, styles and product line increases the operational effectiveness in terms of more sales during the financial year and results increased popularity (Sahu 2015). Due to in-house design, Padinis biggest value added service is the product uniqueness or exclusivity. On the other hand, Malaysians are gradually exposed to more international and regional sports events by the government and private organizations. Due to this reason, the company currently captures the theme of sports and presents a completely new sportswear product line in their existing product portfolio. Compare to Voir Holding Company, Padini is placed in a better position in terms of market share, style, ranges of product deliveries and fina ncial position is the stock market. Though both the companies are operating in the same industry, Padinis product exclusivity and comparatively low price are the biggest advantages over Vior Holding Company. Financial capabilities: Financial stability is the key driving force to implement any new strategic plan. Being the leaders of the appeals industry in Malaysia, the company is financially secure. With the current line of offerings, the company has increased its revenue from 866.26m to 977.90m. However, the company is concerned due to the percentage of increased cost of goods sold. Due to this fact the net income is slightly reduced in 2015. In this strategic plan, the company needs to invest more on assets and workforces for launching the new product line with their existing ranges of product. Due to operating surplus at the rate of 13.68 percent, the company can easily manage the extra burden of costs. Therefore, the above analysis clearly indicates that Padini Holding has the ability of product extension in the future period. Sound capabilities in terms of operational, organizational and financial, the company suggests that the company can make this strategic plan a successful one. Proposed Strategy To execute this plan, the company needs to address the drawbacks, threats and weaknesses strategically. WO strategy: To give more efforts towards online services along with offline retail operation, the company can achieve proposed revenue in the long run (Hitt, Ireland and Hoskisson 2012). This strategy is quite feasible because most of the Malaysians are now preferred to shop online. Offering more products means meeting more customer demands. In this way, Padini can improve their profitability and stabilize the company profit. ST Strategy: There is a plan to introduce new sportswear by celebrity endorsement. Launching this product line by a sports personality is a good option to promote and create awareness. In this way, the company can generate maximum attention of consumers and would result higher profitability. WT Strategy: To fight against the increase competition in the apparel market, the company needs to maintain the product uniqueness and low price strategy (David and David 2016). By constant monitoring over consumers product preferences, the company can understand the trend. Collecting feedback or conducting survey process, the demands of the consumer can be reviewed and updated ranges of product accordingly is another strategy for staying in the market. By this following this strategy the company can achieve more profitability and ensure the sustainability in the market. Internally, the more effective workforce management will be implemented to deliver additional responsibilities. The more workforces may be recruited for seamless operation from the fabric and design department to product delivery. The performance of the company can be evaluated by the following ways: Suitability: By the strong media exposure, the organization can promote their new product line among their customers (Jakhar, S.K., 2015). The trust of the consumers is already achieved by the company for years long services in Malaysia. Therefore, consumer awareness can be established within a short period of time without expending much. Accessibility: Getting more return is the ultimate desire of shareholders. In this case, the company can definitely increase volume of sales and will generate more profit. This would result more return in the long run. However, shareholders must have patience for getting such return because new product needs some time to get popular. Feasibility: The improved revenue and operating profit increases the feasibility of the lunch of new product in the market. On the other hand, new product of Padini is quite competent for having effective leadership, skilled workforce and market position of the company. Conclusion with recommendations: By the above strategic analysis, this can be said that Padini Group can extend their product line and increase the market share in Malaysia. Diverse work culture, effective leadership, brand reputation, skilled workforce - all are favorable factor for the company. However, few recommendations are as follows: New products line must be promoted by mentioning features such as price, design and theme. Such promotion can be done by online because it is cost effective and powerful as well. Initially price of the products must be fixed at low so that consumer can prefer to buy this product. Quality services must be provided by the sales professionals at all stores of Padini. They can increase awareness by promoting new products by mouth publicity.
